Designer Dogs vs. Mongrel Dogs

A number of people think that crossing any two dogs will result in mongrel puppies.  Well, this is not the case at all.  In fact there is a big difference between mongrel dogs and designer dogs.  So keep reading to learn exactly what this difference is!

  • Mongrel Dogs: A mongrel dog is made up of many different types of dogs.  In fact, with mongrel dogs it is sometimes even difficult to work out exactly what breeds the dog originated from.
  • Designer Dogs: A designer dog results from crossing two purebred dogs such as purebred Maltese and a purebred Beagle.

To put it simply, if you cross a purebred Maltese with a purebred Beagle, then the resulting puppies will be classed as designer dogs – as they would be 50% Maltese and 50% Beagle.  However, if one of these designer puppies was then crossed with another Maltese then the resulting puppies would be classed as mongrel dogs – because the resulting puppies would be 75% Maltese and only 25% Beagle.

Therefore, if you are thinking of creating designer Maltese mixes then firstly make sure both your Maltese and the other dog are defiantly purebreds.  If you do this then you can guarantee yourself perfect designer Maltese mixes!
